Open gardens 2019

 OPEN GARDENS 2019

Last year’s drought has had a lasting effect on the gardens but our gardeners have been very busy  this last twelve months. Planning, pruning, moving, planting, building, clearing and planting.

We are open this year on the weekend of June 22nd 23rd 1pm until 5pm

We have one ‘resting’ garden this year and one new garden. Our Chelsea gold medal winner has been busy this year with Chelsea so is resting.  Our new garden is conveniently next door to the existing garden on Ellers drive; The garden is being restored to be in keeping with the 1960’s, grade 2 listed, single storey dwelling (not open) it surrounds. They have made an excellent start.

Four of the eight gardens are  on Whin Hill  and St Eric’s is within walking distance but those not so nimble may need to drive across to Ellers and Middlefield Rd.

We continue with our Weekend Ticket for £5 valid for both days so if you have time you can visit over two days and leisurely enjoy the gardens. Accompanied Children under 16 are  free and welcome.

The tickets are £5 for the two days; children under 16 free (must be accompanied )
There is a treasure hunt for children - all winners, a raffle,  tombola, home produce stall and guess the name of the teddy; all good fun  Plants for sale in each garden;

We remain committed to raising money for Doncaster local charities: last year raising an incredible £5,000.
Charities 2019;  POD (fun, enjoyment and magic) for children on Doncaster paediatric wards
; Given Freely Freely Given;   A series of ‘Banks’ for those in need in Doncaster
; People focused group;   providing a  Social Centre for vulnerable people.

We are indebted to our fantastic sponsors; Walkers Nursery, Blaxton who cover the cost of the printing and donating the most scrumptious cakes for the teas.

OPEN WEEKEND 2018

It's that time of year again when our group of  enthusiastic gardeners in  Bessacarr open our gardens for charity.  We love the event which this year is better than ever.

We are open the weekend of 23/24th June 2018 from 1pm until 5pm  If you don't know us I suggest you start on Whin Hill Rd,  DN4 7AF

We have decided this year to sell weekend tickets as all 8 gardens are open both Saturday and Sunday .  Tickets are £5 for adults and children are free, this entitles you to visit on both days.

There will be delicious home made teas, a great raffle,  a tombola, guess the Teddy bear's name, a home produce stall  and  a children's treasure hunt (£2  ; guaranteed prize)

We only donate to charities local to Doncaster and this year our charities are Caring in Doncaster, Donmentia and Doncaster Foodbank.

Last year  we  raised over £4,000 and have, year on year, exceeded our last years total - can we do it this year with your help?

We are all slightly bonkers about our gardens and some of us have spent the last year undergoing quite major improvements; so even if you have come before there is always something new and new plants to look at. I know at No 2 a very large conifer has been taken down allowing the Acer garden to be more visible  and a new bed planted up. On Ellers Drive a new stream has  appeared and at No17 the grass continues to be dung up to make way for more plants....

We are indebted to Graham Bodle of Walkers Nursery for the fantastic support we have received over the years from this local,  family run company.

2017 Weekend

                          2017 opening is almost upon us  THIS WEEKEND 2 - 5 .

We are expanding this year and are delighted to  have  two new gardens opening for us;  just a short walk from Whin Hill Road.

We are very pleased to say one is designed by a Chelsea Gold medal winner Steven Welch and is a great example of what can be achieved in a medium sized garden.

On Sunday we are delighted Graham Bodle opens his garden for us again. He won Gold at Chelsea this year, along with the Best Artisan Garden, this is the second successive entry he has won this prestigious award.

Kalmias and Cornus excel at No17
Charities this year include REMAP and Doncaster Deaf Children's Society.

Open Gardens25-26th June

Our open days were a great success once again. Thank you to all those who worked so hard to make the gardens so brilliant this year again. Thank you to all of the 451 people who came to visit, and for parting with such a large amount of money, we actually collected £4102, which is a record for our events. The monies were split between REMAP (Doncaster) a charity for adapting physical aids to individual needs, and Doncaster Food bank.
For those of you who did not attend, you do not know what you missed!
The weather for both afternoons was brilliant, the gardens were at their best, the teas were wonderful and the money raising events were out of this world.

The Intrepid Gardens a.k.a. The WHAGS and BAGS
To show you how good the gardens were I have included photographic evidence.

Bessacarr Open Gardens weekend was a great success, and a very big thank you to all those who participated in opening their gardens and finding ways of relieving people of their money. Thank you also to all those who visited the gardens and contributed so generously.
We made a grand total of £2360.01, which, considering that the Saturday was a very wet afternoon, is a great achievement. The total amount will be split equally between our two charities, local homeless ( M25 ) and local Samaritans. ( The £0.01 will be spent carefully ).
Included are some photos to illustrate what was on offer, and to show what you missed if you did not attend.
